Description

4 hours; 4 credits. An introduction to archival theory and practice, including an overview of skills needed to work in archives and contemporary issues in archival management. Topics to be addressed will include: principles of arrangement and description; collection development; and reference and outreach for archival collections. This course provides students with a solid foundation in the theory, methodology, and practice of archival studies, as well as the sense of their professional and social responsibilities and the knowledge of the ethical and legal dimensions of their work. Students will participate in hands-on work in archive and special collection settings under the guidance of the course instructor. Prerequisites: Admission to the History MA Program, or the Advanced Certificate in Public History Program, or permission of the Coordinator of the History MA Program.
