Description
First of four courses in the Social Work with People with Disabilities concentration. It introduces the student to the emerging, multidisciplinary field of disabilities. This course will teach the social construction of disabilities, which is distinct from a medical model of disabilities. Included are definitions, early history of disabilities, the disability rights movements, eugenics, policy that impacts people with disabilities, legal issues, self-advocacy, and disability culture. This course provides the foundation for the three courses on social work practice with people with disabilities across the life span.Prerequisite: Completion of the foundation year of the MSW program of Advanced Standing status.
